One of the big car ferries connecting Nathon to the mainland sported this turtle sculpture. Apparently all these islands were once important nesting grounds for Green and Hawksbill Turtles. Ko Tao means "Turtle Island." Now the beaches are so developed that turtle nests are a rarity if there are any at all. There has apparently been some effort to reintroduce juvenile turtles to some spots on Ko Tao but these may be another example of "too little, too late." |
